SciOPS Panel Information-- Frequently Asked Questions

Why SciOPS? Recent events have shown the critical need for public access to accurate, timely, digestible input from science experts. However, the current systems of science communication often deploy information that is oversimplified, inaccessible, or dated. With these challenges in mind, SciOPS was created by Arizona State University’s Center for Science, Technology and Environmental Policy Studies in collaboration with experts in various fields including science policy, user experience, journalism and survey design. SciOPS surveys systematically capture and display the diversity of expert knowledge and understanding on select topics, giving the science, technology and innovation community a stronger and empirically valid voice in society.

How does it work? SciOPS conducts short, frequently deployed and rapidly analyzed surveys of members of a large standing panel of thousands of researchers in universities, industry and government. In near real-time it presents results on a web-based platform in infographic form and provides tools for the public to interact with the data. The platform provides a place where a variety of users – regardless of background knowledge, demographics, or expertise – can receive unbrokered, representative, and transparent expert opinions about  discoveries, trends, gaps and limitations in understanding as well as public concerns, interests and policies.

What topics do SciOPS surveys explore? SciOPS surveys explore the opinions that experts have about research environment in which they work, research policy issues important to society, new innovation areas, and other topics of interest to both the science community and the public.  Please see the website for the completed surveys.

Who is eligible to be a SciOPS panelist? Right now, panelists must hold a PhD in a science or engineering-related field and be actively working as a scientist or engineer in academia, industry, or government.

I meet the eligibility requirements and am interested in becoming a panelist. How do I sign up? Please complete our intake survey so that we may learn a bit more about you. The responses to this survey, as with all of our surveys, are confidential and will only be used in de-identified and aggregated form.

What are my obligations as a panelist? Your participation in the SciOPS panel and in any of the surveys we send you is always voluntary and you may opt out of the panel or any survey at any time. As an active panelist, we hope that you will participate in at least 2 short (under 10 min.) surveys a year. Also, we encourage you to share SciOPS survey results and other outputs with your networks.

I have a question that was not addressed on this page. Who should I contact? For all other questions including technical support and media inquiries, please reach out to Lesley Michalegko at [email protected] .
