Contested Resource Inputs to Science: How Institutional Provisions on the Access and Use of Materials and Data Affect Research Collaboration Structures and Outcomes

This NSF-funded project seeks to understand how scientists react to regulations and barriers that govern the access, use, and exchange of genetic materials for research, and the science and collaboration outcomes stemming from those rules. We've completed 40 interviews with scientists from across the US and presented a paper with our initial findings at the Midwest Political Science Association Conference in Chicago in April. The next step of this project will involve surveying 4500 marine biologists, entomologists, and ecologists at major research universities about their strategies for navigating regulations over the access and use of biological materials for research.
